Guided Tours of Mingary Castle


Would you like to see for yourself what has been happening at Mingary Castle?
Francis Shaw, the project architect, will be leading two short tours on Monday 7 July
- 6.30pm (for those who would like to go up the external scaffolding)
- 7.45pm (for those who prefer to keep their feet on solid ground!)

Parking will be available at the Estate office and participants will have to make their own way down to the castle from there

Places are strictly limited by health and safety considerations, so advance booking is essential

The service on Sunday 29th June will be at 2.00pm  at Sanna Mission Hall and will include the Sunday School presentations. The praise will be conducted by Rev. Fiona Ogg and will be followed by a barbeque and picnic.

Pram Race

This year's Pram Race is on Friday 8th August starting at 1.00pm from the Kilchoan Hotel, course to the Ferry Stores and back.

We are hoping to organise a toddlers race (under 10) and events during the day at the Kilchoan Hotel - further details to follow. Entry forms are available via kilchoanpramrace@hotmail.co.uk, at the hotel by the end of the week, or contact either Richard O'Connor or Tony Kidd.

Archaeology This Summer

ARDNAMURCHAN TRANSITIONS PROJECT 

The team will be here from Monday 21st July to Wednesday 6th August.  During that time, the Ardnamurchan Transitions Project, in association with Archaeology Scotland, has some exciting opportunities for volunteers.

EXCAVATION OPPORTUNITIES

This year we will be continuing our work at the chambered cairn of Caldh Aindreis in Swordle Bay. The new work will aim to further explore the history of this important monument and also provide an opportunity for you to get involved. Volunteers are welcome on the following dates: JULY: Wednesday 23rd, Friday 25th, Sunday 27th, Monday 28th, Tuesday 29th, Wednesday 30th and Thursday 31st; AUGUST: Friday 1st, Sunday 3rd, Monday 4th, Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th. Places are limited, and will be filled on a first come first served basis.

The excavation will start at 10.00 (with coffee/tea beforehand) and finish at around 4.00pm. Please contact p.richardson@archaeologyscotland.org.uk to book a place. If you need any further information please drop Phil a line.

Basic refreshments will be provided, but please bring your own packed lunch. The excavation will take place outside, so please bring waterproof clothing and sturdy walking boots/wellingtons. Everything else will be provided.

OPEN DAYS

Site tours will take place on site in Swordle Bay on Sunday 27th July and Sunday 4th August. Just pop along to see the exciting finds from this year’s excavations, everyone welcome.

TALKS AND LECTURES 

Tuesday 29th of July - 7.00-9.00pm at the Learning Centre - ‘The Vikings in Scotland: some close encounters of the museum kind’ - Trevor Cowie, Scottish History and Archaeology Department, National Museums Scotland.

Thursday 31st July - 7.30-8.30 at the Community Centre - ‘The Ardnamurchan Transitions Project: Fleshing out the past through the material remains’.

CAMAS NAN GEALL

On Thursday 24th of July Ardnamurchan Community Archaeology, Archaeology Scotland and the Ardnamurchan Transitions Project will be holding a workday at Camas nan Geall. The site contains a Neolithic chambered cairn, historic graveyard and a post medieval township. The workday will aim to manage the vegetation, survey the sites and understand these important sites a little better.

Chainsaw Course

There is a spare place on a two-day chainsaw (cross-cutting and maintenance) course, taking place on Thursday 28 and Friday 29 August. The course is being held at Dalilea, a few miles north of Acharacle. The fee is £295, and it is eligible for ILA. Participants who complete the course successfully receive LANTRA certification.

Teas at the Church

Every Wednesday during June, July and August come along to the church between 2.00 and 4.00pm for tea and scones. There will also be a stall with books, DVDs and bric-a-brac. Donations will go towards the restoration of the church.

Competition List for West Ardnamurchan Show

Here is the competition list for this year’s Show and Sports, which is being held on Friday 25 July. Livestock entries should be at the show field between 8.30am and 9.30am, and craft, baking, etc, between 10am and 11am.

Tables will be available for anybody who wants to sell produce or craft items at the show. It costs £10 for a table, contact Pat Glenday.
