Community Council - a Comment

Donald Houston's briefing to Community Councillors started the meeting on a bright note.  The distillery now has 90% of its equipment and should be working in early 2014.  With this comes a golden opportunity for local people - 6 or 7 jobs, one to be appointed almost immediately.  There are also vacancies on the Estate for a shepherd/stockman, and three to work in the growing wood chip business.  An advert will appear in this month's De tha Dol, or contact the Estate on 208.

Donald then turned to the problem of poaching. It is now taking place on an industrial scale, run by gangs backed by highly-organised criminals.  PC Andy Irvine joined Donald in emphasising that local people can play a key role in fighting this by being aware, and reporting immediately, either to the Estate or to the police, any suspicious activity - BUT members of the public must not approach these criminals, who can be extremely dangerous.  Ardnamurchan Estate takes the present situation, which sees some £40,000-worth of animals taken each week from this area, extremely seriously, so is offering a reward of £5,000 for information which leads to a conviction.

The Community Council has received a letter from Alex Neil, the Health Minister, in response to the Secretary's recent letter about GP provision.  The minister's letter said very little, and certainly made no mention of what is urgently needed - a national enquiry into how GPs can be attracted to rural practices.  We need to find out what is happening with the 'revised' Dewar report, which is supposed to be reviewing the problem.  The letter will now be circulated to our MSPs, and every effort made to work with other community councils who are in a similar situation.

Unlike the battle for local nurses, the Community Council is in a more difficult situation with GP provision.  Because NHS Highland is supporting us with locums - they are booked now into April - there is no sense of urgency, yet we know that having our own GPs, who get to know us, is far preferable.

The massive fare rises on the Corran ferry were discussed, and great concern expressed about the future of a service which Highland Council has severely neglected.  One little statistic says it all - the Maid of Glencoul is now 45 years old.

Rural Practices Can't Get GPs

Monday night's Community Council meeting spent a great deal of time talking to Dr Iain and Mary Gartshore from the Mallaig practice who had come all the way down the road to describe their frustration at being unable to set up the proposed Mallaig, Ardnamurchan and Lesser Isles practice.  They have conducted two rounds of interviews in their search for 7 new GPs and appointed.... no-one.  They have had the good sense to ask candidates for the reasons why they aren't interested in a post in such a beautiful if remote location, and there are plenty of them, but the over-riding deterrent is the requirement to do out-of-hours work, something which, in their present contracts, GPs don't have to do.

This inability to attract GPs isn't our problem alone.  All over Highland Scotland, and even in the more remote shires of England, GP vacancies are left unfilled.  Because they are in such high demand, the Gartshores can't get locums to cover a vacancy they now have, caused when a colleague who, faced with having to do out-of-hours work in the proposed new practice, resigned.  A few years ago, the Gartshores might have expected a hundred good applicants for the job: they wonder whether they will get any.

NHS Highland has promised to continue to support us with locums.  We've been fortunate to have had some very good ones looking after us, and some who come back time and again, but the lack of continuity in care is a serious problem.  Something needs to be done to make rural practice attractive again, and it is only the politicians who can do this - simply because it's going to cost considerable sums of money.

WACC is, as always, fully prepared to enter into another battle over medical services, but it's very different from the last one: we cannot do it alone.  We need to join with other Community Councils, and with other interested groups - and that includes NHS Highland - to pressurise the politicians into action.  Health is devolved to the Scottish government, so the campaign needs to be aimed at Holyrood.

Because we have a special relationship with him, Jac Crosbie, WACC's secretary, has started off by writing to Alex Neil, the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing, describing our problem and appealing for action.  In the meanwhile, it is hoped to meet with other local Community Councils to discuss effective, joint action.

New Fitness Session

There will be a fitness session for adults (men and women) on Saturday 16 November starting at 3pm in Kilchoan Community Centre. The fee will be £5. Please let Jac Crosbie know if you want to come. Her email address is: jac.crosbie@gmail.com

You might of noticed one of these invitations popping through your letter box in the last few days, they are being delivered to every house in West Ardnamurchan. We would be delighted if you could make it along to the Harvest Feast on November 1st at The Sonachan Hotel beginning at 7.30pm.

This will be the third annual Harvest Feast showcasing local seasonal produce. There will be a wide selection of meat and vegetable dishes on offer at the 3 course buffet meal. We currently have local vension, pork and salmon as meat dishes. Vegetarian kale lasange, potato dolphinousie, swiss chard toritta are just a few of the vegetable dishes. All the food is made with local produce and made by a folk from the local area. As many of the vegetables as possible are from the Community garden, which is situated on the road to the lighthouse opposite the Sonachan hotel.

The Garden raffle will be drawn at the Harvest Feast so there is still time to get your tickets. Raffle tickets are £1 each or £5 for a book and are currently on sale in various venues around Kilchoan. There are some fantastic prizes which include a trip for two on Staffa tours (www.staffatours.com), a 2 night stay in the Lochan shepards hut(www.thelochanshepherdshut.co.uk) , a 2 night stay in Ardnamurchan yurts (www.ardnamurchanyurts.co.uk), a bespoke leather belt made by John Chapple, a half hour massage by Clare Holohan, a meal for two in the Sonachan hotel (www.sonachan.com), a bottle of champagne, and the top prize a giant pumpkin grown in the Community garden to mention but a few!

The evening will begin with a three course sit down buffet meal. This will be followed by a family friendly quiz and the drawing of the raffle. We will then have some live music from local musicians and then later in the night a disco, so bring your dancing shoes!

If you would like to purchase a ticket, they are £15 for adults and free for children, you can do so in The Ferry Stores, The Sonachan Hotel or The Community Garden Stall. If you would like more information then please either email the garden on ardnamurchangarden@gmail.com or phone Dale on 510322 or Anna on 510392.
